What is hyperpigmentation and how does it occur?

Hyperpigmentation is the excessive accumulation of melanin, a natural pigment produced by melanocytes—cells found in the epidermis. Melanin plays a crucial protective role, shielding the skin from the harmful effects of UV radiation, but in certain situations, its overproduction leads to the formation of darker skin spots, visible as discoloration. How does hyperpigmentation occur?
