What are the causes of wrinkles?

The image shows a smiling woman. The woman is lying on white bedding with her head resting on her hand.

Everyone wants to enjoy smooth and firm skin for as long as possible. Unfortunately, wrinkles appear with age – an inevitable sign of aging. But are we really beyond our control? Skin aging is the result of many factors, both those we can influence and those encoded in our DNA. It's important to understand what contributes to wrinkle formation so we can effectively prevent them and slow down the aging process.

The image shows a set of "RUE DE SKIN" cosmetic products. On a stone surface, there are four black bottles with dispensers, featuring various product names and descriptions. The products are "CREAM" and "SERUM" with different specifications. On the right side of the image, there is a gray background with the text "RUE DE SKIN COSMETICS" at the top and "RETINYL SERUM" in the center.

1. Biological aging processes

Skin aging is an inevitable process that begins after the age of 25. Why? Because the body gradually loses its ability to produce collagen and elastin—proteins responsible for skin firmness and elasticity. According to research, their levels decline by approximately 1% each year. The result? Skin becomes thinner, more sagging, and the first lines and wrinkles appear.

With age, regenerative processes also slow down. Skin cells renew themselves more slowly, making it harder for damage and micro-injuries to heal. A decrease in hyaluronic acid production further weakens the skin's ability to retain moisture, leading to dryness and increased susceptibility to wrinkles.

Additionally, hormones play a key role. Declining estrogen levels, especially in postmenopausal women, accelerate the loss of firmness and lead to the appearance of deeper wrinkles. Less estrogen also means less lipid production in the skin, which weakens its protective barrier and makes it more sensitive to external factors. As a result, the skin loses its elasticity, becoming more susceptible to sagging and loss of firmness.

2. Environmental factors

It's not just the passage of time that contributes to skin aging. The conditions we live in also have a significant impact. The main culprits include:

UV radiation

Prolonged sun exposure damages the DNA of skin cells and accelerates collagen degradation, leading to photoaging. Prolonged exposure to UVA and UVB radiation contributes to the development of deep wrinkles, discoloration, and loss of firmness. UV rays also degrade elastin fibers, causing skin to lose its elasticity and become more susceptible to sagging.

Air pollution

Exposure to toxins and free radicals increases oxidative stress, which damages skin cells. Particulate matter and heavy metals settle on the skin's surface, damaging its protective lipid barrier. This can lead to inflammation, loss of radiance, and premature wrinkles.

Smoking tobacco

The chemicals in cigarette smoke impair microcirculation, reducing the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to the skin. The result? A dull, sallow complexion and deeper wrinkles. Tobacco smoke also contains free radicals, which accelerate the breakdown of collagen and elastin, leading to a loss of skin firmness.

Dry air and air conditioning

Low humidity and air conditioning can lead to skin dehydration, contributing to dryness and wrinkling. Regular moisturizing and the use of emollients help retain moisture and reduce the negative effects of these factors.

3. Lifestyle

How we care for ourselves daily has a huge impact on the condition of our skin. Daily habits, diet, stress levels, and physical activity all influence the skin's ability to regenerate and its overall condition. Proper care and a healthy lifestyle can significantly slow down the skin's aging process. Key elements include:

Diet

A healthy diet is crucial for skin. Vitamin and antioxidant deficiencies (e.g. vitamin C and E) cause the skin to lose elasticity more quickly. Eating large amounts of processed foods, simple sugars, and trans fats can increase inflammatory processes in the body, which accelerates skin aging. A diet rich in vegetables, fruits, healthy fats, and protein supports collagen production and improves skin firmness.

Skin care

This is an image promoting a skincare product from the brand "RUE DE SKIN COSMETICS." At the top, there is the text "SKINCARE DESIGN" and three serum bottles labeled "RUE DE SKIN SERUM." In the middle section, there are three photos of a woman's face, likely showing the before-and-after effects of using the serum. At the bottom, the brand name "RUE DE SKIN COSMETICS" appears along with the logo.

A proper skincare routine is essential for maintaining youthful-looking skin. Lack of moisturizing, using harsh cosmetics, or failing to remove makeup at night can lead to dryness and irritation. sunscreens, moisturizing creams and serums with antioxidants help protect the skin against external factors and delay the formation of wrinkles.

Which active ingredients are best in the fight against wrinkles?

It's impossible to completely stop time, but you can cheat it a bit. Active ingredients are key in the fight against wrinkles, as they not only slow down the aging process but also intensely moisturize and regenerate the skin. Among the most effective substances are bioactive peptides, antioxidants, and phytochemicals – true allies in maintaining firm and healthy skin. Learn more: Which active ingredients are best in the fight against wrinkles?

Physical activity

Regular exercise improves blood circulation, supplying the skin with oxygen and nutrients, which supports its regeneration. Physical exercise also reduces stress levels and improves sleep quality, which has a direct impact on skin condition. Lack of exercise leads to a slower metabolism, which can impair skin's regenerative processes and contribute to accelerated aging.

Dream

Skin regeneration occurs primarily at night, so the quality and duration of sleep are crucial. Chronic sleep deprivation disrupts cell renewal processes, which contributes to the appearance of signs of aging. During sleep, the body produces greater amounts of collagen and elastin, which helps maintain skin firmness. Lack of adequate rest can lead to a dull complexion, puffiness, and the appearance of wrinkles.

Stress

Chronic stress causes increased cortisol production, which accelerates the degradation of collagen and elastin, weakening skin structure. High stress levels can also increase inflammation, leading to premature skin aging. Relaxation techniques such as meditation, yoga, and deep breathing can help reduce stress and its negative impact on skin.

4. Genetics – the future of skin is written

Not everything is in our hands. Genes play a significant role in the skin aging process. They determine how quickly we lose collagen, how susceptible we are to environmental influences, and how our skin reacts to external factors. If wrinkles appear early in life in our family, there's a greater likelihood that the aging process will progress faster in ours.

How to keep your skin young for longer?

Wrinkles aren't a death sentence! While we can't completely stop the aging process, we can take steps to significantly delay its effects. Retinyl retinoate – a new generation of retinoids in the fight against wrinkles

While we can't completely stop the aging process, modern active ingredients can significantly slow it down. One of the most effective and groundbreaking solutions in anti-aging skincare is retinyl retinoate – an innovative form of retinoid that combines the effectiveness of classic retinol with gentle action. Unlike traditional vitamin A derivatives, retinyl retinoate works faster, is more stable, and is less irritating to the skin. It stimulates collagen synthesis, supports cell regeneration, and reduces the appearance of wrinkles without the risk of irritation or flaking.

Regular use of serums or creams containing retinyl retinoate not only reduces existing wrinkles but also effectively prevents the formation of new ones. This solution is for those who want to enjoy youthful, firm skin without compromise – effectiveness combined with gentleness is the key to long-lasting rejuvenation.
