Balm for atopic skin – what to look for

atopic skin lotion

A lotion for atopic skin should primarily support the weakened epidermal barrier, which loses water more easily and allows irritants to pass through. A good formula combines water-binding humectants, emollients, and an ingredient that limits water loss. Ideally, the formula should have a pH close to that of the skin, which is about 5.5. When it comes to fragrances, start with a tolerance test. See what ingredients and formula characteristics you should look out for every day!

Before you choose a lotion, remember:

  • Priority is a barrier - in atopic skin it is weakened, so the lotion is meant to support it.
  • Three roles in the roster – humectants, emollients, and a transepidermal water loss inhibitor.
  • Consistency above all - emollients are used long-term, even when the skin is calm.
  • Careful with the smell - for reactive skin, start with a patch test.

What characterizes atopic skin?

Atopic skin is a skin type prone to chronic dryness, itching, and recurrent inflammation, in which the epidermal barrier is weakened. It retains water less effectively and provides weaker protection against irritating substances, which is why it can feel tight, rough, and reactive.

Atopic skin vs. normal dry skin

Ordinary dryness results from the weather, hot water, or frequent washing and goes away after moisturizing. Atopy is more persistent because it recurs more frequently and reacts more easily with irritation, even when the skin looks calm.

How to tell the difference:

Characteristic Atopic skin Ordinary dry skin
Recidivism it comes back in waves despite moisturizing blurry after hydration
Itching persistent, appears earlier rare or weak
Reactivity reacts easily to odors, wool, detergents I usually tolerate it well

What ingredients should you look for in a lotion for atopic skin?

Look for three roles in the composition:

  1. humectants water-binding,
  2. emollients smoothing the epidermis,
  3. occlusive ingredients, which limit its evaporation.

It's worth noting that ceramides and other lipids, because they are missing in the damaged barrier. A 2017 Cochrane review confirmed that Regular use of emollients relieves symptoms and reduces recurrences, limiting the use of stronger medications.

Emollients and ceramides

Fatty emollients fill micro-cracks between cells and smooth the skin. A good body emollient also helps retain water, and ceramides replenish lipids and strengthen the barrier.

What to look for in the ingredients:

  • Humectants – glycerin and panthenol bind water in the epidermis.
  • Emollients - shea butter and sweet almond oil moisturize.
  • Occlusion – ingredients that seal moisture into the skin.
  • Ceramides and lipids – support the reconstruction of the barrier.

Soothing and moisturizing ingredients

Aside from moisturization, soothing irritated skin is what matters. Panthenol and Centella Asiatica extract soothe discomfort, while glycerin maintains hydration. This combination is offered by our Refocus Balm, and therefore body lotion for dry skin, which combines shea butter, sweet almond oil, panthenol and centella asiatica.

What to avoid in atopic skin care?

Avoid what additionally irritates the weakened barrier: strong fragrances, aggressive detergents, drying alcohol, and strong acids and retinoids on irritated skin. The simpler the composition, the lower the risk of stinging and itching.

Irritants in lotions

In the care of atopic skin, the most common culprits behind irritation tend to be fragrance substances and part of the preservatives. Highly reactive skin types often prefer fragrance-free formulas. For irritated facial skin, instead of strong acids, choose a gentle one cream with ceramides, which supports the barrier and is in our offer.

How to apply body lotion for atopic skin?

Apply the lotion regularly and preferably right after bathing, on slightly damp skin, because then you trap the water inside. This rule, called the „soak and seal” rule, works better than a trendy ingredient. Gentle cleansing is the first step of the routine, so for your face choose gentle cleansing gel, and rinse your body with a short, lukewarm shower.

Matthew Ridd's team at the University of Bristol compared various emollients in 2022 and did not identify a single winner. Matching the formula to the skin and using it regularly proved to be key. Therefore, instead of looking for one „best” lotion, choose one that you actually use every day.

When and how often to apply lotion?

Apply lotion to the skin at least once or twice a day, and during drier periods more often. The most important thing is the habit, because regular moisturization protects the barrier better than occasional, even heavy application.

Step by step after the bath:

  1. Short, summer shower – hot water further dries out the skin.
  2. Gentle drying – press the towel against the skin, do not rub.
  3. Lotion for damp skin – apply in a few minutes.
  4. Massage in circular motions – wait for the lotion to absorb into the skin.
  5. Repeat daily - in case of severe dryness, apply also during the day.
